BUILDING KUIU

Day Pack Prototype

We received the 1st Day Pack Prototype. As you will see in the included videos below, the pack is modular making it incredibly versatile. This design will be available in 2 sizes estimated at 1600ci and 2500ci. Our goal is to have the 1600ci bag to weigh less than 1 pound and the 2500ci to weigh just over a pound.

Both packs can be used with the 2011 or 2012 Icon Frame or as a stand alone day pack using the 2012 shoulder straps and hip belt.  These bags have removable carbon fiber stays allowing them to compress and throw into your Icon 5000, 6000 or 7000′s and use it to day hunt once you set up camp.

We are expecting these Day Packs to be available in late 2012 or early 2013.

I look forward to hearing your comments, thoughts and ideas.

Jason

Great versatility in the design. This pack will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.

  • Mike P

Looks good, what type of fabric will the pack incorporate?

Also do you have a rough price figured out yet or is it a bit early for that?

    Cheers,

    Mike

  • Harley

What material will the bag be made from? Will it be waterproof or require a rain cover, and will it be quiet enough for archery hunting?

It’s a great idea to have it work together or separate from the Icon frame.

    • Jason Hairston

Our current plan is to use the Icon Pack Fabric a 160D Cordura Rip Stop fabric. All of our current packs are not waterproof due to the construction and we will offer a rain cover.

Extremely impressed with how veristile these day packs are! Great job Jason!

  • Don

Super nice Jason! I love the frame compatibility, but even more so the ability to just use the shoulder straps & hip belt without frame. That is an awesome design feature. I am looking forward to it…thanks!

  • Mike Keller

I love it! Can’t hardly wait. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE offer it in your camo. Also would be really nice to have some sort of attachment system to waistbelt for attaching sheath knife, handgun holster, and gps pouch. Just things you want QUICK access to. Thanks a lot.

  • Dave

I like it. Is it hydration bladder compatible? Also, I’d like to see a “bucket” for a rifle butt or bow so that they could be strapped to the pack without the potential for slipping up and down.

  • Mike P

    Jason,

Looks like a slick pack. Will it be made from the same materials as the Icon bags? Also do you have a rough price figured out yet or is it to early for that?

    Cheers,

    Mike

  • Kyle

Looks like a great product. I haven’t watched the video yet but it looks like it can be used as a meat hauler. I like the idea of being able to put it in a larfer Icon bag and then use it with the frame after dropping camp. Great idea!

  • JerseyJohn

Well thought out Jason. I look forward to the new day pack. I also like the idea of using it without the frame. JJ

  • Lloyd

Jason cool can’t wait to order mine let us know when we can pre order. Question is there a way to attach a bow or a rifle. I like the fact that it can be attached to the frame which allows us to use the meat bag its going to be very versatile. The weight is awsome.

    Thanks

    • Jason Hairston

The compression straps work great for strapping on a bow or a rifle to the side or back. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Great job Jason. I’m really liking it so far! Looks like it could could be the ticket for extended mountain hunts….I am not a fan of lugging around my full size pack on day trips out of my spike camp. At 1 lb, I could definitely envision taking the day pack in (or attached to) my main bag, then switching to it when camp is set up.

Quick question on that….for coming out loaded with a sheep, for example, is there an easy way to attach the daypack to the outside of the Icon 5000 or 7000?

This system will also be very handy for the kind of mule deer/goat/elk day trips that I do.

Another quick Q….have you tested the spotting scope pocket with an angular ocular lens? I am often frustrated with optics pockets being just a little small for my Swaro 65m scope….I am sure guys packing 85mm scopes would feel it even more.

    Last Q…hydration bladder compatible?

    Cheers, and again, great job!

    Chris

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Chris,

Yes you could use the compression strap of the 5000 or 7000 to attach this bag to the outside or just empty is and throw it in. The vertical scope pocket holds my Zeiss 85mm Diascope with the angled or straight lens. Yes on the hydration.

      Jason

  • Matt W

That looks very well thought out! I love the integration into the 2012 frame/suspension!

  • Dean

The kind of pack us day hunters are looking for, small and versatile with game carrying capabilities. Looks awesome.

  • J.R. Young

That is a great looking design. When I first looked at the picture I thought the waistbelt was a little excessive, but seeing how it fully integrates into the ICON system in the video. Very impressive, I’m really liking how the ICON system is coming together…can’t wait to get mine in July.

    • Jason Hairston

Thanks for the comment JR! I just received an up date from the factory, they are finishing up production of the 2012 Icons and will be shipping next week.

      Jason

  • Anthony

Have you put any thought into integrating a gun scabbard onto your packs/frames? Regardless, this new daypack is going to be ridiculous! Can’t wait to try ‘er on.

    • Jason Hairston

What type of gun scabbard are you looking for? I use the compression straps for mine. Thanks for the comment!

      Jason

      • Woody

I would like to see a system where I can strap my gun to my pack and easily and quickly get the gun off the pack while the pack is still on my back. Not so much on the daypack but on the icons.

  • scott daniels

what about waistbelt pockets or maybe a little molle at least on there similar to kifaru? sized to hold calls or windpoof or rangefinder

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Scott,

There are waist belt pockets available that attach to the the 2012 hip belt. There is also a utility belt set up on the waist belt. It makes this set up super versatile. I think you will like it.

      Jason

  • scott daniels

also, on the top compression strap, why the odd angle?

  • Alvaro from Spain

Right on the head of the nail with this one, Jason!

    I’m in for one.

How easy, or difficult, will it be to swap bags (5000 and Day Pack) on and off the 2012 Icon frame?

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Alvaro,

Not long at all. The new design allows for the bags to be removed is just a few seconds. I will do a video for you to review on how this works. I think you will be impressed.

      Jason

  • Jason

Are you going to offer the suspension straps for sale separately or will we have to buy the entire frame and suspension to use the daypack?

  • J Robb

Will we have to buy entire pack frame and suspension or will the suspension straps be available separately for purchase?

  • Greg

Like the idea a lot, just wish I waited a few months to buy the 2012 setup so I could use it without the frame. itching to get out and use it.

    jason i have to know…
    1) as far as the internal stays, what weight bearing ability do they have in the stand alone arrangement of the pack?
    2) what is the torso adjusment available for the stand alone pack? are the load lifters functional? it would be helpful to know your torso so i can compare to your video.
thanks boss, awesome job this year!!!!

  • chad white

    jason i have to know…

    2) what is the torso adjusment available for the stand alone pack? are the load lifters functional? it would be helpful to know your torso length so i can compare to your video.
    3) how is the internal portion of the bag arranged? is it similar or identical to the other icons?
thanks boss, awesome job this year!!!!

    • Justin Starck

Chad, if you are going to be carrying enough weight that torso length, stay stability and load lifters are a concern, why not just use it with the Icon frame?

    • Jason Hairston

      Hey Chad,

There are not functional load lifters on the day pack. As Justin mentioned, if you need load lifters you need the Icon Frame. There is a lot of torso adjustment on this day pack by the way the shoulder straps are attached, using webbing and a tension lock up top and Velcro panels on the back panel.

There are 3 internal stretch mesh pockets on the inside of the pack.

Thanks for the comment. Great questions.

      Jason

  • Mike P

    Jason,

does the hip belt still pivot when attached to the new day-pack?

    cheers,

    Mike

  • JR

The bag desing looks awesome. Love the vertical zipper on the front and the top zipper pocket. Side pockets and straps look perfect too.

With the frame and the meat hauler potential that is great. Looks functional and well designed.

But the stand alone mode makes me have all kinds of questions. Whats going on with the removable stays. The pack appears to have little rigidity and sort of awkward in that mode? Are the straps Velcroed on or what? That looks like it could create pressure points on your back? It also looks like it could sort of feel like just a bag on your back with no ventilation?

It looks awesome just wondering a bit.

    • Jason Hairston

The pack works great as a stand alone. The stays give it enough rigidity to take the load off of your shoulders and make the pack comfortable. If you need to carry a super heavy load put it on the frame. The shoulder straps and hip belt are super comfortable and keep the bag off of your back. No pressure points.

The straps use a tension lock that holds them in place and Velco holds their position on the bag and allows for easy adjustment.

      Great questions!

Nice work Jason and the rest of the Kuiu design crew. I didn’t think Kuiu should be spending time and effort on a day pack, but you convinced me otherwise. That system looks like it could be pretty handy. Although, I still think my 6000 works well enough as a day pack.

  • Rod

Nice design. Love the way the pack can be used with or without the Frame – great option for the base camp hunter vs day hunter. Awesome versatility.

  • Shane C

Looks awesome! I like the option of the 1600 and 2500. Keep up the awesome work!

  • Jason,

The modularity is very inventive. One addition I would like to see is an attach point under the bag where I can attach a piece of foam as a fold-down seat for glassing. My current pack (Badlands 2800) has two compression straps underneath that are designed for attaching a sleeping pad or sleeping bag. I have a foam seat from a tree stand that I attach to those straps. It’s nice to be able to sit down for a quick glassing session and use the foam without having to take my pack off.

I would also like to see what the inside of the pack looks like. For example, is there an attach point or pocket for a hydration bladder? Are there pockets inside or is it just one big sack? I really like having multiple pockets so it’s easy to keep small items secured. If they’re all dropped into one common compartment, then you run the risk of losing them when you pull out a larger item like a shirt or coat.

Something else to think about is easy access to the inside of the pack. My buddy has a Badlands 2200 and it has a zipper on the outside, located on the part of the pack that sits next to his back. It’s really nice because he can fill up his hydration bladder without having to take everything out of his pack.

Final thought: I end up needing to attach all sorts of stuff to the outside of my pack. Shed antlers, bow, rain coat. I have one of those small camelbak packs that has just enough room for a hydration bladder and on the outside of the pack there is a bungee cord that’s woven back and forth in a zigzag pattern. It works great for attaching a piece of clothing and something similar would be nice on your pack as well. I can send photos if you’re interested or think it would help.

    Thanks.

    –MATT

    • Jason Hairston

Your comments are well noted. I will show more details on the inside of the pack when I receive the next round of samples.

      Jason

  • One more comment on the hip belt: please make sure that it works for us small guys with a 30″ waist. Easily half the packs on the market have a hip belt that won’t cinch down tightly on us. Badlands actually makes their packs with two different hip belt sizes to accommodate this.

    Thanks.

    –MATT

  • Okay, one last request and then I’ll shut up :) Please make a video where you take the pack all apart and show us the pieces, then put it back together.

Regarding the material for the pack, why not make it out of the same primeflex (sp?) material that you use on the Chugach raingear? That way, it doesn’t need a rain cover. I’m also a little concerned about the ripstop fabric’s ability to handle abrasion.

    Thanks.

    –MATT

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Matt,

Noted on the video. The Cordura Rip Stop is durable and we have had great luck with this fabric even though it is only a 160D fabric. The Chugach fabric would leak in this design due to the seams, they cannot be sealed with this design. I am working on some designs that may be able to be sealed, this takes time to test and perfect.

Do I see a grey spindrift on the table in that second video?

  • DH

    Jason,

Like the looks of this pack. Was wondering if you had an approximate price range for these
    ?

Also trying to look through older posts but couldn’t find info was wanting. sorry to hijack this thread but was wondering what gps model you use.

    • Jason Hairston

      DH,

I do not have a price yet for this pack. We do not get pricing from the development room until we are finalized and approved to go into production.

I use a 15 year old e-trex by Garmin. It still works so I have not replaced it.

i worked out my new yukon gaiters this weekend and they are killer. only question is with the boot strap, when im shed hunting like this weekend, i wear running shoes without a heel, how long do you think theyll last in contact with the ground?
also, they wife really liked them too, any plans to make them in smaller size?

  • Looking good Jason!

I have a couple of questions:
    1) Are you building one pack that’s compatible with both the old and new Icon frame/suspension or a different pack for both systems?
    2) Can you use the packs without the frame with the 2011 suspension?

  • Tracy

Great looking design Jason. I hope to be getting my 2012 Icon 5000 in the next few weeks and put it though the paces before Sept Montana bow season. Can’t wait for the day pack to come out. Really really clever integration

  • Mark Lampman

    Jason,
what is the exact weight of this pack? Has this pack been tested with elk quarters?

  • Oh Yeah!!!! Very nice! Can’t wait!

  • V_1

Don’t see the point. Yest it’s just one pound. But it would be way better used id it could be integrated with larger pack. Not just sharing the frame but become an integral part of larger system. To me it’s a wasted pound.

  • Jason – I like the idea you have for a day pack – but in my opinion, it does not need a waist belt. My feedback for this design is that your ICON 3000 works perfect for a pack with a waistbelt. This new deisgn may be expandable etc….but how are you comfortably going to carry a pistol, gps, knife, etc… on your waist?

I have – no kidding – one of everything you put out….but the daypack design is disappointing. I would recommend looking at the Badlands Pursuit Day Pack as a starting point, and put the KUIU touches to it. I’ll buy that in a heartbeat.

  • Mike

Can the 1600 / 2500 day pack attach securely, fully loaded to the outside of my 6000, giving me a total volume of 7600 or 8500? Will the 2011 Icon Straps and Waist Belt work with the Day Packs?

  • Ed Gordon

    Jason,

The day pack looks awesome. If ready for my September (and not sold out), I’ll take one with me. Do the straps attach with Velcro only as it appears in the video. Are you thinking about bino attachments for the shoulder straps. Keep up the great work….!

    Ed

  • V_1

As a starting point, I’d suggest to use… Eberlestock spike camp duffel and it’s attachment system and see how to transform it into functional (but not necessarily cool) daypack enough to haul sheep’s leg, and yes it does not necessarily need a waist belt, but it wouldn’t hurt to have one. Maybe more thin and rudimentary, same as straps.

  • JBird

    Jason-

    Dayback looks really good.

Off topic…What kind of watch are you wearing in the video?

  • Trent Manley

I love this design, I will definately have to have one of these, it’s always nice to have a mid size bag to carry the essentials, and I really like the color scheme with the solid color bag an camo shoulder an waist straps, looks great! And by the way.. Will this hold a hydration pouch?
