I have never been totally satisfied with hunting boot design. Like apparel, I have always had a vision to bridge the gap between Alpine Mountaineering boots and hunting boots.
In August 2012 at Outdoor Retailer Convention in Salt Lake City, I met with Marco Zamberlan, a third generation boot maker from northern Italy, to discuss my vision of creating a better performing boot for technical mountain hunting. I’m excited to introduce the result of that colaboration: the Zamberlan KUIU Pamir GTX RR.
Who is Zamberlan?
Giuseppe Zamberlan, the grandfather, started the boot making right after the end of World War 1. From simple shoe repair he moved on to footwear production, driven both by his instinct and by his big passion for his local mountain range, the Piccole Dolomiti, where the company is located.
He understood the poor performance of the early existing soles – made of leather with iron studs – and he both shared and supported the revolutionary ideas of Vitale Bramani, founder of Vibram, who was studying and developing rubber soles at the time. These types of soles became accepted world wide for the future.
Always keeping an eye to detail and quality he bought the first machinery, started relationships with suppliers of raw materials, employed some co-workers and started a small workshop. A wise mix of good skills, passion and investments made a traditional shoe maker shop to a true production reality.
The family represent a reference mark of great importance to him: his wife – Maria – who became a skilled machinist and sewer, Emilio, his son, grew up with the same huge passion for the mountains and helped his father to produce shoes until gradually he succeeded him.
He continued his father’s work in directing the company towards foreign markets. Emilio was also supported by his own wife who helped him by managing the company. For more than 35 years now Zamberlan has been distributing to many European and world wide markets and today more than 90% of its production is destined for export.
Now it is the turn of the third generation. Marco and Maria now manage the family company. Like their forefathers, they too inherited the enduring love and enjoyment of the mountains and for their work, so closely related to that enjoyment, which takes them through all stages of designing, manufacturing, testing and distributing the most comfortable footwear for this purpose, giving to each pair of boot the same value their grandfather Giuseppe gave to the first boot Zamberlan he signed.
80 years after the beginnings Zamberlan is distributed in more than 40 countries and continues to manufacture its most traditional and prestigious models in Italy.
Zamberlan is still managed and run by the family, ably assisted by a valuable team supported by skilled shoe technicians: this passion assures the handing on a tradition of quality, comfort and performance.
The Zamberlan team and I have spent the last year developing this boot by taking their new Award Winning Pamir Alpine Mountaineering boot and adjusting it for technical mountain hunting. We have changed the mid-sole to give the boot more flex, which increases comfort and makes the boot more versatile in a wider range of terrain. We also removed the insulation making the boot lighter and more breathable.
The KUIU Pamir excels in steep and technical terrain even while under heavy loads because of the solid mid-sole (shank) which gives your foot better support which reduces foot soreness while increasing traction, and durability.
I have tested this boot in the Southern Alps of New Zealand and in the Mackenzie Mountains in the NWT and am amazed by what we have created.
Several of the unique features:
- Super Fabric, significantly increases durability, breathability, decreases drying time and eliminates boot stretch.
- Vibram Teton Outsole, a highly aggressive tread which increases traction.
- Rubber Reinforcement System, which is the high volume rubber rand that protects the boot against rock, ice and crampon abrasion.
- Foot Wrapping System, allows the boot to give an very good fit around your ankles giving you support and stability.
